Virtual Film Night – ‘The Exorcist’
- What is it?
I’d like to invite you to join a ‘virtual film night’ watching William Friedkin’s 1973 film, The Exorcist.
- Why (this) film?
My inspiration came from the podcast This Movie Changed Me. I enjoy film not only for its own artistic sake, but also as a doorway into conversations that help me reflect on life. This podcast captures just those kinds of conversations and in a recent episode, UK film critic Mark Kermode discusses The Exorcist.
- How will it work?
On 23 April at 20:00 (CET) we’ll all join a Zoom call to say hi and introduce ourselves. (Zoom link to follow.) We will start the film around 20:30. Please have the film ready to watch on whichever service you are using. If you’re unsure where to find it, JustWatch provides a list of streaming services and prices to rent the film digitally. Following the film we’ll check back in on the Zoom call to share our responses. Kyle has volunteered to host our discussion.
- How can I get the best out of it?
I’d recommend listening to Mark Kermode on ‘This Movie Changed Me’. You can listen in advance of our virtual gathering. For the extra keen (that live in the UK) you can also watch Mark Kermode’s documentary on The Fear of God: 25 Years of the Exorcist.
- Do I need to sign up?
If you are planning on joining it would be really helpful, if you could drop a line in the comments below to let us know. That means we can keep an eye on numbers and make sure we’ve got all the tech logistics covered. Please also leave a comment if you have any questions.
Hope to see you on 23 April!

Looks like we are pointed towards a rendezvous with “Groundhog Day”, a welcome suggestion from one of our first film viewers. This will give us an opportunity to dig deeper into our experiences being stuck in an seemingly unchanging daily reality. You can find the introductory ‘This Movie Changed Me’ episode on Groundhog Day, which can help us launch our conversation, here:

I’ll post a more complete invitation, in the coming days…
