Top 50 Films of 2011-2020

Rinus picks his Top 50 Films from the last Decade

At the beginning of a new decade, it feels right to look back at 2011-2020 and select the Top 50 films that I have experienced as the most helpful for in-depth conversation; the films that tell significant stories about life’s questions, values and predicaments.

Lists are always precarious. They are the outcome of personal taste. A list may say more about the person that puts it together than about the real importance of the films present on it. Personally I am particularly interested in film that engages in depth through its storytelling. I try to see below-the-radar films. I have a special interest in new filmmakers emerging from around the world, often through film festivals.

This is the first decade where I feel I have a good coverage of the films offered. So, I present this list as a purely personal list. It shows the films I have deeply cared about these last ten years. I am sure that there are films that others would have preferred. I hope that we can add titles to this list through comments and later additions, so that it grows into a helpful catalogue of films that stimulate conversation about life and the human condition.

Many of these films have previously been recommended in the Nexus Film section. If you want to read more about a film, you can look it up there.
