Virtual Film Event – ‘I Am Not Your Negro’- Saturday, June 27
- What is it?
We’d like to invite you to join our fourth ‘virtual film event’, this time watching I Am Not Your Negro, director Raoul Peck’s arresting Academy Award nominated documentary on James Baldwin, narrated by Samuel L. Jackson. Baldwin is widely considered the most incisive voice of his post-WWII generation, powerfully retelling the story of the black experience of racism in America. Many argue that Baldwin’s voice is essential in understanding today.
- Why (this) film?
The immersive nature of great films offer us the precious opportunity of visiting new worlds with new eyes. James Baldwin’s fiery, poetic perspectives shed light on the essential history that precedes this critical moment, shaped around the world by the Black Lives Matter movement. Baldwin recounts the lives and deaths of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr., his personal friends and cherished heroes, whose words and actions continue to call us to account for our complicity in racial injustice.
- How will it work?
On Saturday, June 27th at 20:00 CEsT-Rome time/14:00 EST-New York time, we’ll all join a Zoom call to introduce ourselves and get some context that will help frame the film. We will start the film around 20:30. Please have the film ready to watch on whichever service you are using. If you’re unsure where to find it, JustWatch provides a list of streaming services and prices to rent the film digitally. Following the film, we’ll check back in on Zoom to share our responses. Rebekah and Jake will facilitate our conversation.
- How can I get the best out of it?
We’d recommend listening to BBC film critic Mark Kermode’s passionate six-minute recommendation and review of the film. You can listen in advance of our virtual gathering.
- Do I need to sign up?
Yes please! If you are planning on joining it would be really helpful if you could drop a line in the comments below to let us know. Also, if you haven’t already done so, registering for the site will give us what we need (your email address) so that we can send you the proper links for our pre and post film Zoom conversations. Please also leave a comment if you have any questions.
Hope to see you on June 25th!

Hi Kyle ! See you guys on Saturday.
If you weren’t able to join the posted viewing, make sure you see this incredible and haunting film. A must for anyone serious about confronting the reality of systemic racism, clearly present in The United States but also taking on its own form in every country.
