Virtual Film Night – ‘Groundhog Day’

  • What is it?

We’d like to invite you to join our second ‘virtual film night’ watching 1993’s blockbuster romantic comedy Groundhog Day, written by Harold Ramis and featuring actor/comedian Bill Murray.

  • Why (this) film?

We are searching for some relevant comedic relief for these stuck-in-a-moment days. Weatherman Phil Connors (portrayed by Murray) reliving the same day, over and over, has some obvious parallels to the existence many of us are experience in this season of Covid-19 life. While it’s delightfully hard to ever take Bill Murray seriously, this story touches on some deep questions that we hope will lead to an uplifting and enlightening conversation.

  • How will it work?

On 14 May at 20:00 (CEsT) we’ll all join a Zoom call to say hi and introduce ourselves. (Zoom link to follow.) We will start the film around 20:30. Please have the film ready to watch on whichever service you are using. If you’re unsure where to find it, JustWatch provides a list of streaming services and prices to rent the film digitally. Following the film we’ll check back in on the Zoom call to share our responses. Tim has volunteered to host our discussion.

  • How can I get the best out of it?

We’d recommend listening to effervescent English novelist Naomi Alderman share the story of how Groundhog Day changed her life, on the excellent podcast ‘This Movie Changed Me’. You can listen in advance of our virtual gathering.

  • Do I need to sign up?

Yes please! If you are planning on joining it would be really helpful if you could drop a line in the comments below to let us know. This will help us keep an eye on numbers and make sure we’ve got all the tech logistics covered. Please also leave a comment if you have any questions.

Hope to see you on May 14!

I just listened to the podcast interview with Naomi Alderman. She does a wonderful job of framing the important life questions pictured by Groundhog Day. You will love it! And by the way, the film is currently available for viewing on the American platform of Netflix–not sure about other countries, but hopefully elsewhere, too.
